The deeper mines - painting Mounthaven

There is a timeless joy in painting fantasy dwarves, but when it came time to tackle the new Warcrow Mounthaven infantry, I knew I wanted to push past the traditional glinting steel and bright golden braids. The sculpts themselves possess a rugged, heavy-armored presence that practically begs for a darker, more subterranean story. To capture that subterranean grit, I decided to pull thematic inspiration from classic fantasy archetypes: the grim, ash-skinned Duergar and the tyrannical red-and-bronze aesthetics of Chaos Dwarves. Finding the exact balance …

Demons from the frozen north

Recently I've been working with a lot of Eldfall Chronicles miniatures. A friend of mine works at AK and just so happened to get acquainted with my contact at Freecompany, and they got into an agreement to get me painting Eldfall miniatures with QuickGen paints. It has been a very enlightening experience as I found QuickGen give me more control while painting, which lead to better finish when painting very detailed miniatures like the ones from the Eldfall boardgame. My first test models were the Oni Marauders, where I tried to test all most common …

Engines of War

Lately I've been working on my WarRig for Warcrow. It was the last remaining unit for my Hegemony of Embersig army and it was quite a daunting proposition as it was quite a big and complex model. The model is spectacular in its construction as both the internal pilots are sculpted in amazing detail. It's a bit of a shame that the cockpit plate completely blocked the view of the pilots, so I decided to convert mine a bit. I added some magnets on the front of the cockpit that allowed the front plate to be removed, but also, made it so that when as…

Thriving in the underworld

This summer I had the opportunity to check one of the items from my to-do list. Make a trip to Nottingham and visit Warhammer World. Among the many things I found there I got to treat myself to a discontinued Warhammer Underworlds Warband made of clan pestilens Skaven. Warhammer Underworlds warbands are always a treat to paint because while they share a theme, each model is an individual model with it's own style and charisma. For this warband I tried to use Speed Paints as I did for my Skaventide skaven, and try to get them to shine up using the gl…

In the name of the Hegemon

This year I came from Corvus Belli's Interplanetario with a bag full of Warcrow loot. Most of it was what I was missing to complete my Hegemony of Embersig force. Sadly I could not find the Black Legion officers but most of the other wants ended up in the basket. Arquebussiers were one of the miniature sets I was most looking forward to paint. Those pavise shields would look great with my reflective metal color scheme. It was a lot of fun to paint the trees and the flower fields on them. For the rest of the colors I followed my Bucklermen recipe wit…
