A tide of Red

Today I bring you one of my favorite projects from this year, a completely customized Redcap army for Warcrow the wargame, based on the Warcrow Adventures boardgame miniatures. The 2 board game expansions come with enough redcaps to field a complete army, however, all figures are monopose so I had to work my way into reposing them to make them feel distinct.

Starting with the Gobblers, these were cut apart to put the shooter in different positions around the rocky environment. I decided to use the original sculpt that is riding the two looters, as the leader.

For the Flamecobs it was all about reposing the arms and moving the flame to the alternate flamethrower.

The stompers didn't need any cutting at all, just reposing them with the feet on the ground already created a visibly different look and feel to the miniature.

Bugbowls were quite the challenge as their pose was very, very specific. I didn't want all of them with the head on the ground, so one of them was reposed with the legs further back to look as he was tumbling toward the enemy, while another one was reversed into carrying a giant boulder. As the unit is supposed to provide cover to adjacent units, I thought it would seem fitting.

The blind ones did not leave too much room to work either, so most of the changes were to the arm and cauldron position, changing how the lava was being spilled and where the pointman was looking and pointing at.

The Osseous were probably the one that offered fewer options for conversions, as the two redcaps on the miniature were very intrinsically joined. I manage to move the head of the rider and change the position of the weapon for 2 of them. Enough to make them slightly different.

Aside from the base troopers, I also had to paint the character models, and this are the ones that really make the army come together. For the bigger models, I decided that the belly and soft parts of the body would have a different tone, to add color variety to the miniatures. Playing with the lava reflexes was also important to add color to the otherwise big brown skin areas.

Nuada as the leader of the army had to look both serious and imposing, so I put him really close to the lava pool to use the lava reflections to illuminate the lower part of the miniature. I was really satisfied with how he came out in the end, as the miniature's detail on the armor was tenuous at best.

The Crucible is a massive miniature and also a centerpiece of the army. It's the place from where the gobblers and bugbowls spawn, and his body is riddled with smaller riding redcaps.

The overseer is the third big model of the Redcaps. I particularly like his model but for some reason he feels very very fragile in the game with only 2 life for such a bulky model, so I've had mixed results playing with him.

And this is how they all look together on the table. I'm really satisfied with the result as they look very cohesive. I really hope CB supports this army in the future, as right now it feels like it is missing in several key points compared to other current armies. They are kind of a bootleg army of sorts at the moment, but they are super fun to play nonetheless.
