I recently discovered that a friend of mine is one of the designers from the spanish wargame Sphere Wars, that was widely popular during the 2000s. They recently went to Kickstarter to finance a new edition and they asked me to partake in the promotion campaign for the game. I did some lore videos for them as well as some videos talking about the rules and a lenghty interview with the designers to help spread the word about the game.
As part of the promotion materials, the team got me one Kurgan warband, the one that I played on the demos so I could do future videos of battle reports as the new game launches. I was excited to paint this as the style of the miniatures is very different to what you usually see on other fantasy settings.
The Scions of Kurgan are closely related to ice and cold so I wanted them to have a cold blue theme, however, the Sphere Wars team told me a bit about the lore also. They told me their tail appendages were for feeding purposes and thus served as both as a piercing weapon and a tongue of sorts. Based on this premise I made their tales in red colors wanting to enhance the contrast in a transition between orange, red, purple and blue.
The spellcaster for the scions was this really cool crouched figure covered in robes. I wanted the magic to pop so in order for it to not blend with the rest of the miniature colors I opted for a fluorescent green on the staff that could project some OSL into the leathery robes.
The Regorets and the Stalkers were the two miniatures I was given duplicates of, and I wanted the two of them to look different. For the Regorets there was really not much an option aside from repositioning the knife wielding regor. In one of the poses he's stabbing the insides of the rucksack, and on the second one he's protecting the loot from outside attackers.
The stalkers on the other hand had their conversion revolving around their tactival rock. One of the pieces for the rock was missing from the package, and as this was a very old miniature, the company no longer had spares, so I had to make do with what I had. reposing the stalker in a different way that also allowed to shift both the arms and tails.
